11/6-We started looking at Immigration in America and why people came. Also where they were coming from and what life was like when they were here.
11/7-We read the poem on the Statue of Liberty and how it reflects the influx on people coming to America at the end of the 1800's. Also students looked at the problems the cities had.
11/8-We started looking at political machines and how they gave both positive and negative things to the cities. Most cities were controlled by leaders who were a part of Political Machines
11/9-We finished political machines and how graft impacted things.
11/13-Today we looked at two Civil Rights leaders, WEB Dubois and Booker T Washington. They had differing views on how to tackle equality but both desired long term improvement for African Americans.
11/14-We looked at the Chinese Exclusion Act and why America forced a people group out. It was the first limit to a group of people on immigration in America

11/16-Students finished the Temperance movement work from yesterday
11/17-We had a quiz on unit 3 on Industrialization and Immigration

11/28-We continued on with two more muckrakers in Ida Tarbell(monopolies) and Ida Wells-Barnett(lynchings)
11/29-We finished muckrakers with riis who tried to improve living conditions, students then looked at how all the muckrakers helped things improve.
11/30-We started looking at the populist party and how a political party formed to aide farmer's who were struggling in America. Struggling thanks to the railroads and overproduction they sought help in politics. It showed how a group can fight for their rights in a democracy

Cuba had revolted and Spain was brutal. It all led to the American boat the Maine blowing up. Nobody knew how or why it blew up but it was enough for War. Students began a Google Classroom assignment on the Chromebooks.
12/8-Students finished their google classroom assignment from yesterday.
12/11-We recapped the end of the Spanish American War and then I discussed how that led to the Philippine American War. We had many people from the countries fighting in the war. The second part of class we watched a part of the Century Video Shell Shock on the war in America as an into.

did the South not get help from Britain like they expected?
2. What

Wednesday 9/6
US-We began discussing what the term "The American Dream" means. It is a term that can be used to describe many different things. Some people view making it to America and it's freedom as the dream. To others it is rising out of poverty to achieve greatness. For some it is simply a two story home, a family of 4 and a white picket fence. The American Dream is all things to all people, which makes it unique. No other countries have this sort of calling. In the class each student had to focus on what the American Dream means to them. Each class has a google classroom. To do the assignment ask me what your class code is. Go on Google Classroom to do the assignment on a slide.
Gov-We reviewed the states. Most groups didn't do a great job so we talked about the main topics and what each meant. I also went over the parts of American democracy working. For homework students had to write a paragraph on the negatives of democracy.

Sorry for the delayed post. I couldn't get the internet to work. For US history today we discussed yesterday's reading of why history. We then watched the end of Saving Private Ryan and answered the following question:
uThe Character Tom Hanks is playing, says as he dies to Matt Damon’s character(Private Ryan), “earn it.” In the final scene Damon recalls this line at the cemetery and how he feels he earned it during his life. How can this one phrase by a soldier in WWII(a fictional story) describe in your own life why history is important?

uPlease give me
about a paragraph on what you think this line means and how it reflects why we
look at history and how you have been given an opportunity to be here.

Wednesday 8/30
US-In class we looked at why we study history. The main idea we tried to cover today was sourcing and how fake news has created a culture in America where without skills we often times take things that are fake and believe them. We also began the reading why history by David McCullough. Essay Students underlined and listed reasons he gives for its importance
Government-Today we looked at the results of the survey and how so many issues are so closely divided. It is difficult when you are running a country and everyone see things differently. You can never please everyone and so it is difficult to determine the best course of action often times. We finished class by looking at Government and State. They are two key words to this first unit.

Tuesday
US history-we looked at the american citizenship test. I talked about the difference between knowing content and comprehending history. The idea we want to focus on is not just learning facts and "content" but being able to comprehend how it connects to history. In an example I said it is nice to know the first amendment, but we would like to know how the first amendment applies in certain events. What are the limits of it? Who should decide how free, freedom of speech should be?
Gov-We took a survey to determine where students stand on the spectrum of conservative and liberal beliefs. We will look at the results later.
