Monday-Wed

US History
Monday 10/16-We created a timeline of all the big events and reviewed the Google Classroom assignment. It should be turned in already. We also added a couple of new events by looking at Dred Scott and the decision of the Supreme Court as well as Lincoln's a house divided speech.
Tuesday 10/17-We looked at the individual John Brown and how he angered the south and the north liked him. We finished by looking at how Abraham Lincoln's election was the final straw for the south who felt they weren't being represented. They decided to break free from the North
Wednesday 10/18-We discussed the start of the Civil War. Over the last day all 3 periods had the following quickwrite: Of the causes of the Civil War, which one do y0u think was the defining moment in America’s march toward war? Why? Please give a detailed description of why you think that was more important than others.
I talked a little about the start of the war and then students looked in the book on how the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, as well as what the motives were.

Answer the following questions in regards to the reading
1. Why did the South not get help from Britain like they expected?
2. What did the Emancipation Proclamation do?
3. How did Lincoln justify freeing the slaves if he felt the government didn’t have the power to end it? (and please don’t tell me because he felt slavery was bad or something made up)
4. It says, “Emancipation was not just a moral issue, it became a weapon of war.”-What does it mean by this? How could it help win battles?

5. Was this done more to help win the war, or more because of Lincoln’s sympathy towards slaves?

Government
10/16-We finished up talking about the Legislative Branch. We looked at how debates and filibusters happen to try to prevent a bill from going through. We lastly looked at what the President's role is in the process.
10/17-Students attempted to pass a class bill. It is waiting to be approved or vetoed by the President. Students also had the period to review for the test tomorrow.
10/18-We took our Unit 2 Test today!
